On Monday, October 28, the students in Beverly Levine’s fifth-grade class at Viola Elementary School waited anxiously in front of their playground designs in the hopes of being chosen as the winning project.
For the past month, these students have been working in small groups to develop an all-abilities playground, using concepts from the math and science curriculum. Their biggest challenge: learning how to work in a group. In the beginning, they all had ideas and thought their own was the best, but after coming together, they realized they all had different strengths to contribute to the group.
“We found out that it helps to have many hands working together and we’ve actually helped teach each other the various concepts of scaling and math. It was a great experience.” – Finn, Brandon & Aiden, Group 3
Superintendent Dr. Adams, Building & Grounds representative Mr. Smith, and Math Specialist, Mr. Zink, met with each group for five minutes to hear each presentation and ask questions. Projects were judged on presentation, budget, and design and judges were given a rubric to use for scoring.
Every team did an amazing job working together, balancing a budget, and designing new playgrounds. Congratulations to the winning team – Ben, Amir, and Cathy of Team Four – for taking home the win. Thank you to PBL specialist, Ken Wojohowski for working so closely with these students this month. #MountiePride #SuffernCentral
