My Brothers Keeper
Changing the narrative of boys and young men of color, and all students, by closing and eliminating the opportunity gaps they face and helping them to reach their full potential.
Suffern Central School District, along with the Village of Sloatsburg and Town of Ramapo, Accepts the New York State My Brother's Keeper Community Challenge
December 1, 2024 - Suffern Central is proud to partner with the Village of Sloatsburg and the Town of Ramapo to bring the New York State initiative, My Brother's Keeper, to the community as part of our strategic district initiative around belonging and well-being. By accepting this challenge, the District commits to taking the necessary actions to develop and execute programs and strategies designed to help boys and young men of color - and all youth - realize their full potential. This effort will be led by Associate Director of ENL and Equity, Dr. Garcia-Mathews.
New York State’s My Brother’s Keeper (NYSMBK) initiative is designed to encourage school districts, colleges and universities, and community groups to join forces to improve outcomes for boys and young men of color. This initiative brings stakeholders together to plan and implement a cradle-to-college and career strategy, consistent with the goals and recommendations of President Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) Task Force.
The NYSMBK Community Challenge asks school communities to work with community leaders, business leaders, and youth development experts across sectors to design and implement action plans that expand opportunities for all young people, regardless of who they are, where they come from, or the circumstances into which they are born.
The next step toward becoming a NYSMBK community is to convene a local summit to partner with businesses, youth service organizations, civic groups, families, and local community partners to assess needs and assets and to determine properties for action. Please see the joint letter from the district and municipality to NYSED accepting the NYSMBK challenge.
Currently, Suffern Central School District has reserved Thursday, January 23, at 6:00 pm for this summit.
