Nestled in the woods outside of Suffern High School is a classroom unlike any other. Ropes, platforms, climbing walls and more await the students in Adventure Learning, a semester-long class that teaches trust, team building, leadership and getting over your fear of heights! Students love challenging themselves in this elective course offered only in the spring. They move from easier to more advanced obstacles, including climbing a 40-foot tower, in a series of self-discovery activities that promote interpersonal relationships and individual growth.
We caught up with the class while they were preparing to climb up 25 feet to a platform and then jump off the platform, with the intention of hitting a ball suspended in the air. Students could move the ball closer or farther away from themselves, depending on how much of a challenge they were seeking. For us – climbing up there would have been challenging enough!
