Please join us in welcoming Dr. Amy MacKenzie to our administrative staff as the new Supervisor of Secondary Special Services for Suffern High School. A graduate of Suffern High School, Dr. Amy MacKenzie began her career as a middle school English teacher in the Bronx. She then worked as a special education teacher in the Yonkers Public Schools for seven years. In 2009, Amy joined the special education department at Suffern High School as an English teacher. She also served as an advisor, College Board and ACT Coordinator for Students with Disabilities and is the current Interact advisor at the high school.
“I’m really excited to take on this role within the District and help more families get the services they need,” said Dr. MacKenzie. “I’m looking forward to working with the staff to build our transition program and to strengthen the relationship between the teachers, students, parents and outside agencies to ensure a smooth transition to adult life for our students. I also look forward to holding workshops to educate parents on the community resources available to help our students succeed after high school and help build programs at the high school that teaches students the life skills they need for adult life.”
Amy received her Bachelor of Science in Secondary and Special Education with a concentration in English from Manhattan College, her Master of Arts in Psychological Foundations of Reading and Learning Disabilities from New York University and a Master of Science in Educational Leadership from Bank Street College of Education. She completed her doctoral degree in Language and Literacy from Fordham University. She has presented her research on all over the country at conferences including the International Literacy Association, Council for Exceptional Children, New York State Reading Association, National Council of Teachers of English, American Educational Research Association, and Association of Literacy Educator and Researchers. She is the current president of the Suffern Middle School PTA. Dr. MacKenzie and her husband live in Suffern with their three boys.
With the addition of Dr. MacKenzie, current Supervisor of Secondary Special Services, Courtney Violetti, will move to Suffern Middle School full time, working with our students in grades 6-8, as they transition from elementary school and into the high school. Courtney began her career here in the District in 2009 as a special education teacher at SHS before becoming a Supervisor of Special Services for both SMS and SHS.
I’m really excited to see this team flourish in these roles as we round out the PPS department,” said Dr. Lisa Castaldo, Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel Services. “Amy and Courtney have unique skills that fit nicely in these positions, and I’m looking forward to watching them grow as they bring new ideas to these buildings.”
