Who we are:   Our department is comprised of six counselors and one director assigned to students alphabetically by last name.  We are supported by a secretary who assists us, and our students, on a daily basis.

What we do:   Counselors are central to student life at Suffern High School.  Through group guidance activities and individual appointments, counselors aid students on their journey through Suffern High School.  We ensure the scheduling of graduation requirements with the goal of timely graduation, monitor student progress throughout the year and coordinate post-high school planning.  The Guidance Office prides itself on our open door policy and students are encouraged to stop by before school, in between periods and during unit lunch to simply say hello or to schedule an appointment. In addition to the activities listed above, or office also handles:

  • Working Papers: Mrs. Capolupo (vcapolupo@sufferncentral.org or 357-3800 ext. 41308) Guidance Secretary, handles working papers.  Suffern High School can issue working papers for New York State only.  Students who gain employment in New Jersey, must visit a New Jersey high school for working papers.
  •  Scholarships: The Guidance Office acts as a liaison for many local scholarship organizations.  Scholarship information is updated in the scholarship section of students’ Naviance accounts and on the Scholarships tab of the guidance website. Typically, local organizations send us their applications in late February-early March.
  • AP Exams: Mrs. Kern, Guidance Chairperson, serves as Suffern’s AP Coordinator.  Information on AP registration is distributed through AP classrooms and usually begins in March.  Information will also be posted on the Forms & Documents tab of the guidance site.
  • Withdrawal from SHS: Mrs. Capolupo (vcapolupo@sufferncentral.org or 357-3800 ext. 41308) Guidance Secretary, can assist families who seek to withdraw or transfer to another high school.

*A special note: registration of new students is done at Suffern High School. For registration information, please contact Mrs. Capalupo.

He also announced a series of next steps for districts to take between now and August 21, including posting separately their remote learning, COVID testing and contract tracing plans, in addition to holding discussions with parents and staff.  With this new information, the Suffern Central School District will take a few days to align its state-mandated reopening plans with Governor Cuomo's directives. Please watch for updates on school day scheduling, instruction, transportation and other critical district operations in the coming days as well as dates for parent and staff discussions to be held.
