• Databases

Databases are different from catalogs and search engines. A library catalog allows a search for items owned by a specific library, including books, movies, journals, magazines, music scores, government documents, and more. Databases allow efficient searches for published information such as magazines, journals, and newspaper articles.

Databases and search engines differ substantially in terms of coverage and retrieval quality. Users need to consider the quality and limitations of databases and search engines.

There are many types of databases used for research. Choosing a database will depend on what type of information is required.

Research databases, such as JSTOR and Academic Search Premier, contain references to scholarly information. Most of the content in these databases is only available through a library.
